The Beth Ditto Collection Is More Than Just a Celebrity Clothing Line

When I first heard that I was going to the shoot with Beth Ditto I was incredibly excited. I've long been a huge fan of The Gossip and Beth's boldness and individuality stood out to me. She was cool. I knew that whatever she was creating was going to be nothing short of magic. She had previously released a standout collection with Evans, and it was a collection with no rules, no boundaries. Remembering this on the morning of the shoot left me nervous. I had no idea of what I was going to wear, the direction, the styling... The call sheet did nothing to calm my nerves either. We were going to be working with some of the best in fashion; photographed by Ezra Petronio and styled by Katie Grand. My day was about to be nothing short of epic.

Is My Black Not Beautiful?

I still remember the disappointment to this very day. Before I went to boarding school I had never read a fashion magazine. I grew up on a council estate in London and fashion magazines were a luxury item that weren't even on my mind. The closest I got to a fashion magazine was my cousin's Top of the Pops magazines, where we would learn the lyrics to every song and put posters on our walls. Then I went to boarding school and I was exposed to a very different crowd - one of affluence.

Anyway, in my very first year I shared a dorm space with another girl who would get weekly packages from her mother. And in those packages were a few magazines. I particularly remember Sugar. And every week they would have make up tutorials... How to do the latest looks ... On pale skin, olive skin and dark skin... But the dark skinned woman was Alesha Dixon at best. Fast forward 15 years later, and we're still in the same place.

I Don’t Need a Barbie Doll That Looks Just Like Me to Know That I’m Beautiful

Recently, Mattel, the manufacturers of Barbie, announced that they are adding three new body types— curvy, tall and petite — to their existing doll range. Barbies will also come in seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles.

Growing up in the UK, the Barbie experience never really resonated with me. Yes, I saw Barbie dolls growing up and my sister and I played with them at Toys ”R” Us every Christmas, but I’ve never actually owned one. I never paid attention to Barbie’s body type, though I do understand why many people have criticized it. Her body type is unrealistic and her blond hair and blue eyes demonstrate only one specific form of beauty. My cousin doesn’t even allow her three-year-old daughter to play with Barbie dolls because she wants her to understand that beauty comes in many forms. With this announcement, it seems like Mattel is finally telling the world that there are different kinds of beauty, and they come in seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles.
